VASCULAR SURGERY

We have a team of dedicated vascular specialists to provide a range of comprehensive vascular procedures.

The common problems of the vascular system include:

Varicose veins
Leg ulcers
Gangrene of the feet
Stroke (Usually from carotid artery narrowing)
Aneurysms (abnormal enlargement of the artery)
Claudication (calf cramps when walking) and rest pain (pain from arterial blockage)

Surgery for vascular problems can be divided into :-

Endovascular Techniques

Endovascular techniques are methods of treatment using a puncture through the skin rather than large wounds. Through a sheath inserted into the artery or vein, treatment is effected. The endovascular techniques include radiofrequency ablation of varicose veins, endovascular stenting of aneurysm, angioplasty and stenting for arterial obstruction.

In balloon angioplasty, a balloon is used to open a narrowed or blocked artery to improve circulation to the feet. Sometimes, this is combined with placement of a stent made of wire, to keep the affected artery from narrowing back down. Radiofrequency ablation of a varicose vein is a minimally invasive technique of treatment that does not cause much bruising and discomfort, thus allowing an early return to work or normal activities.

Open Methods

Open Methods would be lower limb bypass procedures for arterial obstruction, abdominal aneurysm repairs and carotid artery endarterectomy. In diabetic patients or smokers with blocked arteries in the legs, balloon angioplasty may not be enough to improve blood flow, hence a bypass procedure using either the patients own vein or a prosthetic tube to get around the blockage is used. Carotid endarterectomy is a method of clearing the fat deposits in the artery supplying blood to the brain. This is done to prevent strokes.
