SPINE SURGERY

Spine Surgery has developed rapidly in the last decade and treatment options have expanded to better meet the needs of individual patients. Spine Surgery has developed to be an integral part of services in Mount Alvernia Hospital. The hospital’s Radiological services, MRI Scanner, CAT Scanner, Laboratory, Physiotherapists and Pain Management clinic aid in the management of spinal diseases. We have a team of dedicated Spine Surgeons to provide the best care for patients with spinal disorders.

Spine Services

Evaluation of neck pain, low back and neurological symptoms

Although majority of neck and back pain are benign, there are many pitfalls to the early diagnosis of potentially serious spinal problems like spinal infection and metastasis. Careful and purposefully directed history, examination and investigations will enable early treatment.

Evaluation and Treatment of Scoliosis

Among the children with scoliosis, most do not progress to a severe degree. However, some do. It is important to pick up those with the potential to become severe and institute appropriate treatment. Timely bracing may prevent further curve progression. When surgery is indicated, the necessary approach, levels to be fused and appropriate instrumentation will need careful consideration.

Surgeries in the Cervical Spine

Most patients with cervical spondylosis improve with conservative treatment. Persistent neurological symptoms may require surgical intervention. Common surgeries in the cervical spine include discectomy, or corpectomy with spinal fusion. Cervical laminoplasty is indicated for certain types of cervical myelopathy. These surgeries are done under magnification with surgical microscope.

Surgeries in the Lumbar Spine

Majority of patients with lumbar disc prolapse and spinal stenosis are treated conservatively. A prolapsed disc that require surgical treatment can be treated with classical disectomy, micro-disectomy or endoscopic disectomy. Spinal stenosis can benefit from decompression if symptoms are disabling.

Complex Spinal Surgeries

Spinal Instability, Spinal Metastases, Degenerative Scoliosis with spinal stenosis, Traumatic Spinal Fractures, Spinal Infection require complex reconstructive surgeries. These surgeries involve decompression, strut grafting, and instrumentation in the majority of cases. There are now many advances in instrumentation, grafting devices and bone substitute biomaterials. Many patients are able to attain spinal stability, good pain relief and neurological improvement following surgery.
