NEUROSURGERY

Comprehensive neurosurgical care for brain conditions are available round the clock at Mt. Alvernia Hospital. Backed by the latest diagnostic and neuroimaging modalities, we have a team of experienced and dedicated neurosurgeons with various special subspecialty interests to cover the entire spectrum of neurosurgery. Some of these subspecialty areas are:

Neurovascular surgery

Patients with conditions like stroke and loss of consciousness from sudden bleeding in the brain receive comprehensive, immediate and urgent care from our neurosurgeons. Microsurgical clipping of cerebral aneurysms, evacuation of intracerebral blood clots, carotid endarterectomy, excision of arterio-venous malformations (AVM) and cavernomas are some of the operations that are routinely treated.

Surgical Neuro-oncology

This refers to the neurosurgical treatment of brain (and spine) tumours. Microsurgical excision of brain tumours of all types (meningiomas, gliomas, skull base tumours, etc.) is routinely done. Many different types of surgical approaches are used, depending on the nature and location of the tumour within the brain and the spinal cord.

Spine Neurosurgery

Surgery of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine is routinely performed and spinal implants are also widely used if the condition warrants it. Many of these surgeries are also done under the microscope eg. lumbar microdiscectomies, anterior cervical discectomies, removal of spinal tumours, etc.

Functional Neurosurgery

This specialised area of neurosurgery treats conditions like epilepsy
(eg. temporal lobectomy, vagal nerve stimulator implant, etc), chronic pain (eg. spinal cord stimulator implant, sympathectomy, intrathecal Synchromed pump insertion, microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia, etc.) and movement disorders (eg. Parkinson's disease, dystonia, spasticity, hemifacial spasm, etc.)
