EYE SURGERY
We have a team of eye surgeons to provide a comprehensive range of services in Eye Surgery including cataract, pterygium, glaucoma and eyelid surgery.
Cataract Surgery

What is a cataract?
A cataract is said to be present in an eye when its natural lens loses transparency and becomes cloudy. When this happens, light cannot pass through in the normal way. Vision will be blurred.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract Surgery
is generally performed by small incision cataract extraction, otherwise known as phacoemulsification together with the insertion of an intraocular lens (IOL) implant. It is sometimes incorrectly described as "LASER cataract surgery" by some people. The surgery is mostly performed under topical anaesthesia (anaesthesia with eyedrops alone) or sometimes by a regional block (with injection) depending on each case and also the surgeon. It is a day surgery procedure, requiring only observation for 1-2 hours and no hospitalization is required. Excellent vision is usually achieved the following day. With the right choice of IOL implant, a person's myopia (short-sightedness) or hyperopia, (for sightedness) may be corrected as well! |

Pterygium Surger

Pterygium is a reddish pink, triangular shaped fleshy growth that is usually found on the inner side of our eyes and is often seen growing onto the cornea (seen as the black part of our eye). It can occur in young adults as well as older people. It is commonly thought to be associated with UV light exposure although many other factors could be involved. In its early stages, it is usually harmless except for its cosmetic appearance. However, in its later stages, it can cover the cornea and lead to severe loss of vision, although this may take many years, or may never even happen.
Pterygium Surgery is simply performed by removing the triangular shaped flesh and transplanting a small piece of translucent membrane (known as conjunctiva) from the upper part of the white of the same eye to patch the bare area. This is done with several stitches. The success of this procedure is very high, up to about 97% with a small risk of recurrence of the growth. Apart from preventing advanced spread of this growth onto the cornea which can lead to loss of vision, the cosmetic result achieved is often excellent and the eye looks normally white once again!

Laser Treatment For Diabetic Retinopathy

This is performed for patients with severe retinal disease caused by Diabetes Mellitus or swelling of the macula (the crucial part of the retina responsible for clear vision). It is done in our outpatient clinics and can be performed on the day of consultation itself.

Glaucoma

This is an eye condition where the fluid pressure within the eyeball is too high and damages the optic nerve. It is damaging to sight as the increase in presssure can injure the delicate nerve fibres in the retina. Assessment for glaucoma is carried out in our outpatient clinic. The treatment for glaucoma can be in the form of medication, laser therapy or surgery, depending on the type of glaucoma.

Strabismus ( Squint)

This is caused by a lack of coordination between the eyes. As a result, the eyes look in different directions and do not focus simultaneously on a single point. Initially, strategies to strengthen the weakened muscles and thereby realign the eyes are attempted. Eye muscles exercises and glasses may be prescribed. Surgery to realign the eye muscles is carried out if strengthening techniques are unsuccessful.

Eyelid Procedures Or Surgery

Botox injection, to relieve wrinkles around the eyes, is available at the eye clinic. It is performed by multiple tiny injections around the eyes. Simple eyelid procedures to correct droopy eyelids (ptosis), create double eyelids, remove excessive skin or fat may be performed by some of our trained eye surgeons.
