Mount Alvernia Hospital
A not-for-profit hospital founded on Catholic values
The origins of Mount Alvernia Hospital can be traced back to
1950s Singapore. Back then, public hospitals were overcrowded and understaffed
and the nuns from the Franciscan
Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood (FMDM) who worked at the hospitals
felt that more could be done to bridge the gap.
So pooling their savings and salaries, the FMDM Sisters started
a core fund and canvassed for donations. Many generous individuals and companies
responded to the call and eventually enough was collected to build a new hospital
which opened on 4th March 1961 with 60 beds.
Today, Mount Alvernia is a 303-bed general acute care hospital
with tertiary medical capabilities and two multi-disciplinary medical specialist
centres. The hospital is supported by over 1,000 accredited doctors, with about
100 specialists based on-campus. As the hospital develops, more medical suites
will be built and the pool of doctors is expected to grow.
An exempt charity, Mount Alvernia is a not-for-profit, private
Catholic hospital founded on Christian values. Our annual surplus goes into
developing and upgrading the hospital, supporting our outreach service, the
Assisi Hospice, and many community outreach activities.
A charitable organization affiliated to the National Council
of Social Services, the Assisi
Hospice is our commitment to provide holistic care for those with life-threatening
illnesses in an atmosphere of warmth and compassion. The hospice provides three
kinds of services- inpatient care, home care and day care.
Besides caring for patients, Mount Alvernia Hospital also strives
to play a part in building a healthy community through various community activities.
Over the years, we have conducted Community Health Screenings at Community Centres,
Singapore Buddhist Lodge and Buddha Light International Association. Today,
we continue to reach out to the community through the People’s Association
Wellness Programme, an initiative to encourage a healthy lifestyle amongst senior
citizens.
In Singapore, we are the only private hospital that provides
clinical pastoral care as part of our care for the whole person. Our Clinical
Pastoral Care team provides emotional and spiritual support to patients and
their relatives who may be in need of support in coping with illness, or in
coming to terms with incapacitation.
As a mission founded Catholic hospital, Mount Alvernia is part
of the FMDM global network spanning Singapore, Australia, England, Ireland,
Italy, Malaysia, Nigeria, Zambia and Zimbabwe, reaching out to the sick, poor
and marginalized through education, nursing, pastoral care, counseling, prison
and parish ministry.
